Burger City
VACAVILLE – When you’re in Vacaville and hungry for a burger, the first place that comes to mind for many locals is Burger City because of their large variety of gourmet burgers that are cooked to order and consistently tasty. But did you know that they also serve delicious dinner plates? We decided to sample a few of these items and with St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, we couldn’t pass up the Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner.
Delicious and tender, the corned beef roast was full of flavor and served with cabbage, red potatoes and baby carrots. The meat was very tasty and the vegetables tender, rivaling the Irish meal served from my grandmother’s kitchen every St. Patrick’s Day. It’s not only available on St. Patrick’s Day, but every Monday throughout the year Burger City offers us lovers of the brined brisket a year-round taste of Ireland.
Other tantalizing items on the dinner menu are their Fish & Chips and steak dinner options. Choose a Rib Eye or a New York steak cooked to perfection and served with soup or salad, steamed vegetables and your choice of fries, potato salad or a baked potato (available after 5pm). You can also add their Alaskan Cod, Jumbo Breaded Shrimp or Mississippi Catfish to your steak dinner for a very low price. The Fish & Chips are very popular and have been a family favorite of ours for years. The tender Alaskan cod is perfectly crisped with a beer batter coating and served with coleslaw and chips.
Their menu also boasts specialty fries such as Sweet Potato, Hot Buffalo, Garlic, Cajun & Beer Battered that can be served with your dinner as an upgrade to your potato choice. Several varieties of milkshakes and malts are available for the kids (or kids at heart) and parents can choose beer, wine or a cocktail from their full bar. You’ll want to save room for one of their homemade desserts such as bread pudding, cheesecake or another decadent choice from their daily dessert menu.
Burger City is located at 500 Elmira Rd. in Vacaville. You can reach them by phone at 707-448-3377 or online at burgercityvacaville.com.
Evelyn’s Big Italian
FAIRFIELD – Ask anyone which pizza is the most popular in Downtown Fairfield and more than likely, hands down, it will be Evelyn’s Big Italian. With its charming atmosphere, al fresco patio and of course, Peter — your authentic New York Chef, it is reminiscent of a New York City pizzeria. And boy does it ever seem like a bustling New York restaurant during the lunch hour! You’ll want to get there early or call in your order as the lunch line could be out the door.
Our office opted for take out and chose some vegetarian items from the extensive menu. We started with a large Bianca Pizza (pictured), from their Gourmet Pizza Menu. It’s a sauceless pizza with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses and topped with fresh tomatoes and spices. Despite its lack of traditional pizza sauce, the Bianca was very flavorful with a perfectly crispy crust.
For pasta, we chose baked shells filled with spinach and ricotta cheese. The al dente shells hold a generous amount of cheese and are covered in marinara sauce, topped with mozzarella cheese, and baked. We also sampled the Gnocchi in Pesto Cream Sauce. The sauce, a delightful mixture of basil, garlic and cream complemented the dish perfectly. Lastly we had to try their “world-famous” cannoli’s to round out our Italian lunch. These alone are worth the visit!
Evelyn’s also offers an array of appetizers, grinders, sandwiches, calzones, Stromboli, and take and bake pasta dinners. Keep in mind that when Evelyn’s says large, they mean LARGE. We had plenty of leftovers after our party of 5 ate lunch.
Evelyn’s Big Italian is located at 704 Texas St., in Downtown Fairfield. They can be reached by phone at 707-421-9000 or online at bigitalianpizza.com.
